Sun-Warmed Days and Ancient Stones: My Unforgettable Trip to Greece

Some trips are about ticking major sights off a list, and others are about the people who make a place feel like home the second you arrive. My time visiting Greece—staying with two of my really good friends in the coastal village of Oropos—fell firmly into the second category. It was a trip filled with rich history, incredible food, endless laughter, and the quiet comfort of deep friendship.

Arriving in Oropos offered a wonderful, unhurried window into Greek village life. My friends showed me around their neighborhood, and we even stopped to grab traditional gyros, wrapped up warm, flavorful, and entirely authentic. We definitely make them wrong in the u.s.! Back at the house, every single morning started with a wonderful ritual: one of my friends would make me whipped coffee with cinnamon while we slowly woke up to the Greek sunshine. And no one was more spoiled on this trip than my dog, Elzie. My friends absolutely adore her, making sure she felt just as welcome as I did while we spent our days simply sitting, talking, and catching up on life. When the sun went down, our evenings turned cozy and competitive as we gathered around the table to play ClueDo late into the night. i still think dimitris cheated!

my friends wanted to ensure that i saw athens, so we made our way to explore the city's breathtaking layers of history. Walking through the capital felt like walking through an open-air history book. We got to see incredible historic buildings and sprawling ancient ruins, and lots of statues. Among the highlights was seeing the historic stadium where the Olympic Games were born and held, standing in a space that has held the weight of athletic glory for millennia. We also visited a stunning arena where famous musicians and performers would go to sing, and toured a fascinating museum built right over underground ruins, where you can literally peer down through glass walkways into the ancient world beneath your feet.

Between the sightseeing and the late-night board games, the food was an absolute highlight. My friend treated me to authentic, home-cooked traditional Greek meals every day, made with the kind of care and love that you can only get when someone is cooking for people they cherish. and he is definitely a good cook! I've already asked for his recipes. I got to try flaky, golden traditional spanakopita packed with savory greens and cheese, rich chocolate soup for dessert, and delicious traditional orange Greek cookies baked by my friend's mom, along with so many other classic favorites. in fact, my friend almost had me buy the whole bakery!

i will never forget how at home i felt staying with my friends. Their orange and olive trees were a nice change from my usual surroundings. Being able to learn more about their culture and their lives connected us very deeply, and they will always be family. It's these types of relationships that make not only travel, but life well worth the journey.
