Walking Through Amber and History: My Unforgettable Trip to Gdańsk

Some cities hit you with their energy the second you arrive, while others quietly pull you into their story street by street. When I visited Gdańsk in early November of 2024, it was definitely the latter. Walking through its historic heart felt less like exploring a modern European city and more like stepping straight into the pages of a centuries-old maritime epic, wrapped in the quiet, crisp air of late autumn.

The moment you wander into the Main Town, the architecture completely steals the show. Walking down the famous Long Market feels like stepping onto a movie set. The historic merchant houses line the streets with their ornate facades, gabled roofs, and intricate stonework, rebuilt with incredible care to preserve their centuries-old glory. Right in the heart of this historic square stands the city's most famous landmark: the Neptune Fountain. Dating back to the early 1600s, this bronze symbol of Gdańsk’s connection to the sea looks out over the square.

One of the highlights of my trip actually came from a piece of advice I picked up from a flight attendant on my Swiss Airlines flight. he swore by a particular restaurant, and it turned out to be the perfect brunch spot. I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benedict, which was such a fun twist on the classic—it came served on a small, fluffy Belgian waffle instead of an English muffin. It was the perfect savory-meets-sweet bite, accompanied by a fresh side salad, bright orange juice, and a great cup of coffee. To top it off, even after leaving a tip for my wonderful waitress, the entire bill was just $14. that's what i call a bargain!

Gdańsk is Known globally as the "Amber Capital of the World." the city’s historic streets—especially spots like St. Mary’s Street—are lined with charming shops and artisan displays glittering with the fossilized tree resin. Browsing through the little shops and holding a piece of polished amber up to the light—watching it catch the autumn sun like a tiny, trapped piece of ancient sunlight—was one of my favorite ways to slow down and appreciate the local craftsmanship. and of course, i found an owl magnet that had amber in it.

Gdańsk wasn't on my bucket list either, but i am glad i went. it was inexpensive, full of history, and made me want to just grab a cup of coffee and go for a slow stroll through the city center.
